Wicked San Francisco Reviews

After leaving Los Angeles, Wicked has returned to its original home of San Francisco, where it will stay for an open-ended run.  So far, the musical has received good, although slightly critical, reviews.  If you’re going to see Wicked in San Francisco, you might be interested in what the following reviews are saying.

Let’s start with the not-so-good.  The criticisms mainly deal with the musical score, and no so much with the acting.  Two reviews seem to think that the score is a little on the bland side.  Take, for example, these passages from the SF Restaurant Examiner and the Sacramento Bee, respectively:

“Wicked resembles a Lloyd-Webber musical in which there are no hit songs.”

“While Schwartz’s songs are serviceable, not truly memorable, the lead performances carve out their own emotional territory.”

On the other hand, both of these reviewers seem to agree on the quality of the acting.  The review from the SF Restaurant Examiner states that although the girls in the San Francisco show are not quite as good as the girls on Broadway, “they really give it all they’ve got and are supported by a strong ensemble cast.”

The review from the Sacramento Bee echoes these sentiments:  ”Wicks’ voice attacks Elphaba’s signature first act ballad, ‘The Wizard and I,’ belting out the musical’s emotional core.  Matching Wicks intensity with a breezy performance is Kendra Kassebaum as Glinda the Good Witch.”
