With Wicked still playing to large crowds at Chicago’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts, some may wonder – why is Wicked leaving Chicago in January of 2009?
Well, according to this Chicago Tribune interview with David Stone (producer of the Chicago production of Wicked), the reasons are multi-faceted.
First, he says, he wants to “leave while we’re still a huge hit.” He noted that September and the winter are “not good times” for Wicked and that while they will still make money this year, “next winter, next September might be a little harder.”
In addition to monetary reasons, Stone also noted, “there are still a lot of cities in the middle of the country that we’ve stayed away from because of the Chicago run that we really need to get to.”
When asked if Wicked would ever come back to Chicago, Stone didn’t rule out the possibility, but he did say, “not any time for a few years, I do know that.”
