You could say that, in many ways, Gregory Maguire is the one who started the Wicked craze. After all, he authored the best-selling novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West – the novel that the Wicked Musical is based upon.
Maguire has recently come out with his newest book, “A Lion Among Men,” which is the third book in his series about a reimagined version of the fictional world of “Oz.” He also recently did an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
In the interview, he talks a little bit about his isolated childhood and also about some of the inspirations behind his version of Oz and his character, Elphaba. I found this quote from the interview to be particularly interesting:
“I wanted to make a magic land in which there could be sex and trouble and poverty and oppression so that when virtue shows up, one can see it for the beauty that it is.”
